Daily Five: A Public Hearing Date Set On Seaside

Five Things To Know For Wednesday, May 25, 2011

1.   There is a chance of rain today before noon, and it may stay cloudy the rest of the day, according to the National Weather Service. A high of 68 and a low of 55, according to the service.

2.   Today, at the elementary schools, third-graders will hear a 25-minute presentation by Waterford Police Youth Officer Nicole VanOverloop on how to protect themselves from strangers. The presentation is part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Take 25 Campaign. Waterford will be one of 3,000 communities in the United States taking part in the campaign.

3.   At Monday’s planning and zoning Commission meeting, the board set the public hearing on the Seaside Center zoning amendments for June 13. Mark Steiner, who is in the midst of purchasing the property, is looking to remove the stipulations saying it must be housing for 55-year-olds and older and the buildings must be renovated (he wants to knock them down and rebuild).

4.   Congratulations to the Three Rivers Community College class of 2011, which graduated this weekend. 5.   On this date in 1953, the United States performs the first and only test of its nuclear weapon on the ground in Nevada. And on this date in 1977, the world is forever changed with the release of “Star Wars.”
