A Meeting That Should Bring Out Animal Lovers

1. Guess what? Snow is back. It is expected to snow/rain all day and until 11 p.m. tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

2. The board of finance will continue its budget hearings at 7 p.m. in town hall. A large crowd is expected to show to support for keeping a $45,000 designation for designing a new animal shelter. On Tuesday, board of finance member George Peteros reiterated his position about cutting the designation.

“I’m worried about human needs,” he said. “Not the perceived needs of animals.”

3. Superintendent Jerome Belair has submitted his proposal for a pay-to-participate fee structure to the board of education, .  The fees would be:

$25 per non-sport activity at Waterford High School, with a cap of $200 per family; $50 per sport per student at WHS, with a cap of $100 per student; $10 per non-sport activity at Clark Lane Middle School, with a cap of $100 per family; a $25 per sport per person at CLMS, with a $50 cap per student.

Also on the board of education budget, board of finance member J.W. “Bill” Sheehan said last week he was looking to cut $300,000 to $500,000 from the budget. Patch interviewed fellow board members Peteros, Brian Vachris, Alan Wilensky and Ron Fedor Tuesday, and none said they would be looking to cut that much money unless they found something particularly inexplicable.

4. The Waterford High School class of 2011 is sponsoring a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s in Groton on Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. The Easter Bunny is expected to make an appearance, so it might be a nice thing to do with the kids.

5. UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma turns 57 today, a day after beating Purdue in the NCAA Tournament to make yet another Sweet 16. Also blogger Perez Hilton turns 33.
