A Date Of Decision For Pay To Play, New Middle School Principal

Five Things To Know For Friday, April 29, 2011

1. A cloudy day today, with a chance of rain this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. A high of 66, and a low of 44, according to the service.

2. Some news from the Board of Education meeting Thursday night.

As many of you know, the high school’s graduation ceremony has been moved to Connecticut College. Originally, the plan was to have it in Palmer Auditorium, but students complained because of the limited seating (they could only bring four people).

So, Principal Donald Macrino secured the central green at the college. If it rains, the graduation will be held in Palmer Auditorium and seating will be limited. But if it is nice, it will be held outside on the green, with “unlimited seating,” Macrino said.

Also, the board of education did not act on pay-to-participate Thursday night. The board agreed it would make a decision at its next meeting on May 26.

And speaking of that day, the board will decide on a new principal to replace current Clark Lane Principal Michael Lovetere, who is . The district will begin formal interviews next week, and will have a candidate for the board to vote on at that meeting, Superintendent Jerome Belair said.

3. For everybody who was wondering why there was police from several departments and K-9 dogs out on Boston Post Road Wednesday afternoon. What happened was New London Police reported a larceny, and a off-duty Montville police officer saw the suspected car, according to Police Lt. Brett Mahoney. The Montville cop stopped the car, and apprehended the driver, but the passenger took off running into the woods, Mahoney said. Police from several departments (it was a New London case) went searching for the man, but couldn't find him.

And speaking of emergency services, some fire news (admittedly a week late). A family of three, two parents and a kid, from Hammast Street were displaced for a few days after a kitchen fire Thursday night. The family was not displaced because of the fire though, but because the house was filled with trash and needed to be cleaned, First Selectman Dan Steward said. The house was cleaned, and the people moved back in, Steward said.

4. Two movies premier at Hoyts Cinema tonight. First is Fast Five, the fifth edition of the Fast And The Furious series, starring Vin Disel and Paul Walker, which runs at 4:20, 7:10 and 9:55. The second is Prom, starring Aimee Teegarden and Thomas McDonell, which runs at 4:30 p.m., 6:50 p.m. and 9:25 p.m.

5. On this date in 1967, Muhammad Ali stripped of the heavyweight title after refusing to enter the military. Ali cited religious reasons for not wanting to fight. And on this date in 1992, riots break out in Los Angeles after police officers are acquitted of all charges stemming from the Rodney King beating. The riots last three days, with 53 people losing their lives and hundreds of buildings destroyed.
