A Call To The RTM On Pay-To-Participate

Five Things To Know For Monday, May 16, 2011

1.    It is expected to be cloudy today with periods of drizzle, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, heavier rain is expected, according to the service.

 2.    On May 26, the board of education will vote to install pay-to-participate.
Patch is curious what the town thinks the board should do.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible for Patch to call all 19,000-plus people in Waterford. However, we have an out. The Representative Town Meeting represents (as the name suggests) the entire town. So, this week, Patch will try to reach all 22 members of the RTM, or at least enough until a consensus is formed (more than 11 voting one way), and ask them what they think.

Just as a practical aside, if any RTM member wants to email his or her opinion on this issue, please write paul.petrone@patch.com. That will save you a phone call (oh, and Teresa Wilensky, I already have you marked down in the “yes” column for pay-for-participate. There is one down.).

3. The personnel review board was expected to meet tonight, but will not because of lack of business. This happens every single month with this board. The charter revision committee proposed eliminating it, but was shot down by the town in November, the only one of the six charter revisions that wasn’t passed.

4. Tomorrow, registration beings for Babe Ruth (16- to 18-year-olds) baseball. The registration runs from .

A quick tangent: At an RTM budget review, member John Foley proposed possibly eliminating the 16-to-18-year-old team, questioning why the town should pay for adults to play baseball. He made a motion to cut $8,800 from baseball, but it failed.

5. On this date in 1866, the U.S. Congress eliminates the half-dime coin and replaces it with a nickel. I read three pages trying to figure out the difference between the two and my head started to hurt. And on this date in 1918, Congress made criticizing the government illegal with the passage of the Sedition Act of 1918.
