Becky's Farm & Garden: A Family Business That Just Keeps Growing

The Waterford farmer's garden and market is in new hands but all the Scott family are old hands when it comes to farming.

Just about everyone in the Scott family grew up on the farm in East Lyme. And like any family with deep roots, growth has come naturally.

Becky's Farm & Garden is the latest offshoot of the family business. Becky Scott, 32, bought the market garden on Boston Post Road in Waterford from her uncle Web in May, in partnership with her brother Walt, a carpenter and  custom cabinet-maker. Their mom, Dolores, is helping run the store with them too, making this a real family affair.

"We were not all working at the time, so it's really worked out," said Becky. "It's in our blood. We live right on the farm. It's a wonderful lifestyle."

So what changes can people expect now that Becky's taken over?

"What I'm trying to do here is have more variety," said Becky. "That's what people want. Plants are wonderful but produce is what a lot of people like."

All the produce will be grown on-site or brought over from the family farm in East Lyme. The plants and flowers come from Becky's other uncle's farm in Essex, although many of the flowers will be grown in the garden in Waterford.

"Another big thing people really like is the cut flower garden," said Becky. Everything here is Connecticut grown, she adds.

Becky's Farm & Garden is located right next to the Oswegatchie Fire House at 451 Boston Post Road in Waterford. Read Becky's weekly blogs on Waterford Patch and get regular updates on Facebook.
