A song. An analogy? Does it go beyond Blondie and Sandy?
The Tide is High and I am moving on….What does that mean to you? Yes, Sandy came ashore and brought a whole new definition of high tide and a lot of people are making decisions on what they need to hold on to or move on from.
Many times we are all faced with situations that make us realize the landscape has changed and staying stuck on the way we always have done things means we will drown. The tide is high, the water is up to your chin and you either need to keep doing what you have been doing or swim with the current and ride it out to where life is pushing you. Maybe that is why I love the surfing analogy – work to control what you can and use the forces beyond your control to open up an opportunity that a minority of other human beings enjoy.
The tide is high but I am moving on...
Are you a new parent? Neck deep in diapers, sleepless nights, and financial worries? Stay in the moment and ride it out for the best time of your life.
Are you a parent who just discovered their child has a diagnosed disability? NO parent can EVER prepare themselves for that news. Focus on the gifts your child is giving you, ask for help when you need it, and investigate the rights of you and your child rather than the struggles that other families are having. Basically, look ahead and not down.
Did you just live through Sandy? The storm that could have also been called Rocky based on what was moved up and down the shores.
Are you without power? this is testing your creativity and resourcefulness, especially if you are a parent or caregiver. Irene gave us a test last year, reading, games, outside acivity, meals on the grill, and yes early bedtimes.
Lost your home? The only thing left to do is retool. Ask for help, or graciously accept help that is offered & look to pay it forward when you can. What, if any opportunities, are now available to you? My friend said he is moving from East Haven to Maine.
Don’t be Blondie! You do not want to hold on to be someone’s number one. As Sandy, and even her sister Irene, has taught us; there are powers beyond our control at work that will move you. Be moved and prepare for the next challenge. You will come out much stronger.
