Sunken Boat To Be Salvaged This Week

The sunken yacht has been secured off Two Tree Island and surrounded with booms to guard against diesel leaks. It's going to require a crane to lift it.

The boat that sank after hitting Little Goshen Reef on Saturday will be salvaged this week.

"We had to put a boom around the boat to contain the diesel and the diver in the water yesterday plugged the vent holes, and that seemed to be successful," said  Jeff Dziedzic, whose company Towboat U.S. of Mystic is handling the salvage operation.

The Nino, a 65-foot pleasure boat that belongs to the Antonino family, (which owns Antonino Auto Group), remains mostly submerged but it was towed out of the channel and secured off Two Tree Island yesterday.

Dziedzic said he would be going over the salvage plan with the U.S. Coast Guard today, with view to getting the boat out of the water on Tuesday or Wednesday. This is one of the largest vessels Dzeidzic's company has salvaged to date and it's going to require a 160 crane on a barge to raise it.

The Nino, a Vicem yacht, weighs 80,000 pounds under normal circumstances. With the additional water weight, it's likely to weigh over 120,000 pounds. The barge is the largest in Southeastern Connecticut and is more commonly used at the shipyard in Groton.
