As many of them have each year since Sept. 11, 2001, survivors of Connecticut residents who perished during the terrorist attacks gathered at the state’s 9/11 memorial on Westport’s to remember their loved ones.
During a ceremony Thursday at the park overlooking Long Island Sound, where the state's 9/11 memorial is located, Gov. Dannel Malloy, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and other state and local leaders led a hundreds of attendees in marking .
“I know that you must understand that those of us here today who did not experience your sacrifice, love and support you, honor you, as you express your love and your support of those we lost and those who remain,” Malloy said during brief remarks.
Officials unveiled and dedicated “Sanctuary,” a sculpture created by David Boyajian of New Fairfield, and Matt Rink of Redding, made in part from aluminum cladding from the World Trade Center. The sculpture is designed to honor those the state lost—152 people with ties to Connecticut, including 65 residents. An American flag that flew over Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam in Afghanistan was presented to the state by the 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry Regiment. Each victim’s name was read aloud:
