Local Woman 'Shocked' Over Newtown Decision

A Montville woman is shocked that the residents of Newtown rejected a budget that increased spending on school security.

Montville’s Lori Houser is “shocked” that the residents of Newtown rejected a proposed budget that put a police officer at every school in town.

Tuesday, Newtown held a referendum on its general government and education budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. Both budgets were soundly defeated, after they increased spending to pay for a police officer or private security guard at every town school.

The general government’s budget had $420,000 for police officers to staff each Newtown public school, as well as $150,000 for security guards at private Newtown schools, according to Newtown Patch. The Board of Education’s budget was a 5.5 percent increase over this year’s total, and also included unarmed security in the town’s schools, according to Newtown Patch.

Houser, in a post on this website, said she was “shocked” by the decision. Are you?
