VIDEO: Up-Down Sawmill, An American Treasure

Find out what's so special about the Up-Down Sawmill, a National Landmark in Ledyard's backyard.

Ledyard's opened for the season on the first week of April but already, sawmill volunteers have their work cut out for them.

Volunteers are cutting logs and timber for the Alexander Knight House Museum in Ipswitch, Mass. The house was built in 1657 and the mill was commissioned to provide boards sawn in the up-down manner, which would have been used at the time of the Knight house's construction.

The mill operates and offers demonstrations on Saturdays through May from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
