Heat and Air Quality Advisories For Waterford Today

Conserve your energy and save your breath—it's going to be hot and there's an unhealthy air alert for New London County.

This is expected to be the hottest day of our current heatwave with high temperatures topping 92 degrees, so there's another heat advisory in effect today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A number of people may also find it harder to breathe today. Air pollution levels of ground-level ozone are predicted to be in the "unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" or above category, so the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has also issued an advisory for that too.

During the warm seasons, unhealthy ground-level ozone concentrations may cause a variety of respiratory problems including breathing difficulty, coughing, and throat irritation. Take it slow today and try to avoid doing anything too strenuous outdoors.

DEEP has the following tips for when unhealthy air is forecast.

  • Conserve energy at home and at work by setting your [air conditioner] thermostat at a higher temperature in the summer.
  • Reduce use of gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment.
  • Refuel motor vehicles after dusk.
  • Combine errands and reduce trips. Limit engine idling.
  • Use household, workshop, and garden chemicals in ways that keep evaporation to a minimum, or try to delay using them when unhealthy air is forecast.
