Grab & Go: Kid-Friendly Activities for March 2 - 8

March Into Family Fun!

March is such a changeable month, full of warmth, rain and yes, dare I say it, snow.  If you are growing tired of the cold and indoor activities, then you are certainly not alone.  Looking ahead to some outdoor activities, check out the Hartford Marathon O’Niantic Run, including a 5K for adults and a wee mile for children ages 2-7.  The event takes place March 19th so register online and kick-off spring with a great outdoor family activity! 

Here is what’s on the calendar for the coming week.
Wednesday, March 2nd:
What/Where:  Mother Goose on the Loose/Waterford Public Library
Time/Cost:  10am & 10:30am/Free
If You Go:  This drop-in program combines music, movement, books, and language development to help children get ready to read. Birth to 3 years with an adult.

What/Where:  Preschool Science Series/Children’s Museum of SECT
Time/Cost:  1:30pm/Each program costs $9 per member, $15 non-member (includes museum admission)
If You Go:  Children ages 4-6 will make paper during this hour-long class.  Register 860-691-1111

What/Where:  Pajama Time/Waterford Public Library
Time/Cost:  6:30pm/Free
If You Go:  An evening story time for ages 2 and up with an adult.  Kids come dressed for bed for 30 minutes of great stories and songs, and then head home to be tucked in!

Thursday, March 3rd:
What/Where:  Fantastic Friends/Waterford Public Library
Time/Cost:  10am/Free
If You Go:  This 45-minute story time features music, stories & crafts suitable for independent listeners ages 3 and up with adult.

Friday, March 4th:
What/Where:  First Friday Free Family Night/Children’s Museum of SECT
Time/Cost:  5pm-8pm/Free
If You Go:  Bi-lingual activity sponsored by Target

Saturday, March 5th:
What/Where:  The World of Dr. Seuss/Waterford Public Library
Time/Cost:  10am-2pm/Free for all ages with an adult 
If You Go: Drop in for a Dr. Seuss themed activities and crafts.

What/Where:  Read with Kody the dog/New London Public Library
Time/Cost:  10am-11am/Free for beginning readers with adult
If You Go:  Kids can read with Kody the dog who loves stories!

What/Where:  Get Ready for Mardi Gras/New London Public Library
Time/Cost:  2pm- 4pm/Free
If You Go:  String beads to wear for Mardi Gras! 

What/Where:  15th Annual Old Saybrook Chili Cookoff /Main Street
Time/Cost:  12 noon-3pm/$10 to taste all 32 chilis - Free for kids 12 and under
If You Go:  Taste some fabulous local chili and cast your ballet to vote for your favorite!  Winners receive a donation to the charity of their choice.

Sunday, March 6th:
What/Where:  Free First Sunday/Lyman Allyn Art Museum
Time/Cost:  4pm/Free Admission
If You Go:  Make your own real dream catcher and enjoy some snacks. 

Now, if Sunday finds your family taking a local daytrip,
I have a few suggestions suitable for loads of family fun. 

What/Where:  Maple Sugar Sunday/Stamford Museum & Nature Center
Time/Cost:  11am-3pm/$10 per person
If You Go:  This annual family event focuses on the deeply-rooted New England tradition of maple sugaring. Guests will get to taste many sweet maple syrup treats, see maple sugar and tree-tapping demonstrations, make a maple-themed craft, enjoy the popular pancake brunch, and go on a scavenger hunt.  Call 203-322-1646 for more information. 

What/Where:  A Jigsaw Jones Mystery – The Case of the Class Clown/Westport Country Playhouse
Time/Cost:  1pm and 4pm/$15 per ticket
If You Go:  Based on the book by renowned author James Preller, this play will have the whole family laughing.  When someone in class is playing practical jokes, Theodore “Jigsaw” Jones, the school’s "detective", deciphers secret codes to solve the mystery. Great for grades 1-4.
