Fran Sweeney Supporters Hope to Turn The Field House Lancer Blue

T-shirts marking the official renaming of the Waterford High School Francis X. Sweeney Field House now scheduled for Saturday are on sale now. All proceeds will go to help pay for new plaques and signs.

For many people, having Waterford High School's Field House named after Francis X. Sweeney, the high school's first athletic director, is something they've been waiting to see happen for a long time.

Now, thanks to the incoming snowstorm, everyone will have to wait just a little bit longer. The renaming ceremony that was originally scheduled to be held on Friday, January 3, has been pushed back to Saturday, January 4. The dedication ceremony is now scheduled to be held at the Waterford High School Field House at 6:45 p.m. The ceremony will take place between the Waterford vs. New London girls basketball game (5:00 p.m.) and the Waterford vs. New London boys basketball game (7:30 p.m.).

Fran "Doc" Sweeney's many fans have been lobbying hard for this for years and, now the time has finally come, they want to make the most of it. With that in mind, t-shirts have been made to honor the occasion that are now available, in Lancer blue, naturally.

If you'd like to buy one ahead of time, they're available for sale on Thursday, January 2, at Filomena's Restaurant in Utopia Plaza on Route 1 in Waterford from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. They will also be sold on the day itself at the High School Field House starting at 5:30 p.m. for as long as supplies last.

The cost of each shirt is $10, with proceeds to go toward funding the signs and plaques bearing the field house's new name.
