Daily Five: When The Old Waterford High Is Coming Down

Five things to know for Friday, April 19, 2013.

1. Today, there is a 20 percent chance of rain, with a high around 65, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there is an 80 percent chance of rain, with a low around 52, according to the service.

2. Now that the new building has been completed, the obvious question is when is the old Waterford High School coming down. Well, the answer is this summer.

In May, construction crews will soon begin to abate the old school of asbestos and other potentially dangerous materials, according to Bill Ayles of JCJ Architecture. That should take some time, but the building should be leveled sometime this summer, Ayles said.

The Waterford Police Department has asked to use the building for trainings, so construction crews will accommodate that ask, Ayles said.

3. Speaking of the Waterford Police Department, another retirement announcement.

This time, it is the charismatic Andre Parker, a man once brave enough to dance – or at least try to dance – in front of a group of 1,500 screaming fans at Waterford High School. Parker has been with the Waterford Police Department for 25 years. Parker has agreed to take a job as a sergeant with the Foxwoods Police Department.

From us at Patch, congratulations Andre, and we hope you enjoy the new job.

4. One new movie opens at Waterford’s Regal Cinemas today.

This afternoon, Oblivion (PG-13), an action movie where Tom Cruise has to fight to save mankind against alien invaders, plays at 1:10, 4:05, 7, 7:25, 9:50 and 10:15.

And on this date in 2011, Fidel Castro resigned his position as leader of Cuba, after ruling for 45 years.
