Daily Five: Waterford Police's Popular Facebook Page

Five things to know for Monday, April 29, 2013.

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high around 62, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 45, according to the service.

2. Waterford Police Lt. Brett Mahoney was interviewed by National Public Radio last week about the success of Waterford Police Department’s Facebook page, according to, fittingly enough, Waterford Police Department’s Facebook page.

The page has caught criminals several times since October, when the department really started to use it more. In one week alone, it was responsible for catching two alleged criminals.

The police department puts photos from security cameras of people who are shown stealing from department stores, among other posts, and asks the public for help finding them. So far, it has been very effective.

3. Today, Fr. Dennis Carey has a court date at 10 a.m., but he is unlikely to show up.

Carey, the former Waterford priest who was arrested in June for first-degree child pornography, had a severe stroke earlier this month. He was expected to either accept a plea deal by the state today or face a trial today, but he has been excused from his court date because of his stroke, according to New London Superior Court.
