Daily Five: Waterford Police Lt. Retires

Five things to know for Thursday, April 18, 2013.

1. Today should be cloudy, with a high around 55, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight there is a 20 percent chance of showers, with a low around 48, according to the service.

2. Tonight, the Board of Education meets at 7 in Town Hall, and – as always – the meeting is open to the public with time for public comment at the beginning.

Tonight, the board will meet in executive session to discuss “non-renewal reduction in force.” In other words, the board will discuss if they will renew the contracts of all the non-tenured teachers. Then, the board will take action publicly on what teachers’ contracts they will renew and won’t renew.

3. Waterford Police Lt. Jeff Nixon, a longtime member of the force, has announced his retirement. Here is a post by the Waterford Police Department's Facebook page about Nixon's retirement:

"The Waterford Police Department announces the retirement of Lieutenant Jeffrey Nixon from duty. Lieutenant Nixon was hired by the WPD in September of 1988, and has a long and illustrious career as a Patrol Officer, Youth/Dare Officer, Patrol sergeant, Records Sergeant, and a Lieutenant with oversight of the Patrol, Administrative, and Investigative Services at varying points, as well as part of the Police Chief’s 'Administrative Team.'

Lieutenant Nixon was vital in starting numerous programs here at the Waterford Police Department, most recently focused on the Crisis Intervention Team, and the Domestic violence 'Lethality Assessment Program.' His contributions at the WPD cannot be understated, and will be sorely missed.

Jeff has a strong educational background, and thankfully will continue to teach to law enforcement officers in the region, as one of the instructors (numerous topics) in the Law Enforcement Coalition of Southeastern Connecticut. Jeff is continuing his law enforcement career as an officer in another jurisdiction, we here at the Waterford Police Department wish him well in his future endeavors.

How about some likes for this fine officer as he embarks on another fine career!"

4. Just a quick note. I, Paul Petrone, have taken over as the editor of the Montville Patch. I began that job on Monday.

I will remain the editor of the Waterford Patch. I very much look forward to the new people I’ll meet and the challenges I’m inevitably face covering Montville, but I will still remain as dedicated to Waterford as I have been.

And as always, thank you all so much, I’ve really loved the past 2 ½ years here running Waterford Patch and look forward to many more.
