Daily Five: Waterford Business Closes

Five things to know for Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

1. Today there is a 50 percent chance of showers in the morning, with a high around 73, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight there is a 20 percent chance of showers after midnight, with a low around 49, according to the service.

2. The company Portrait Studios, a chain specializing in family portrait photography, has closed, meaning the location inside the Crystal Mall’s Sears has closed as well.

According to WFSB, Portrait Studios had to file bankruptcy, close all of its stores and lay off all of its employees. The chain had been in existence for 60 years.

3. Tonight, the Nuclear Energy Advisory Council meets in Waterford Town Hall to meet with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The NRC will give a presentation to start off the meeting and then there will be time for questions from the public. The meeting is at 7 in Town Hall. Waterford is home to the only active nuclear power plant in Connecticut, Millstone Power Station.

5. On this date in 1965, the Astrodome opened and the first indoor baseball game was played. And on this date in 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, which officially ended the Civil War.
