Daily Five: Opening Day; Boston Relief Fund

Five things to know for Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

1. Today, there is a 30 percent chance of showers, with a high around 53, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of showers, with a low around 41, according to the service. 

2. Saturday morning was Waterford North Little League's Opening Day, which kicked off the start of the league's season.

At the event, Dan Spangler - who is expected to graduate from the Coast Guard Academy this spring - threw out the first pitch. Spangler is a Waterford North Little League graduate. 

Congratulations Waterford North Little League, hope the season goes well. 

3. Simon Property Group, which owns the Crystal Mall, has agreed to donate $100,000 to The One Fund, according to an announcement on this website.

The One Fund was created by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino to "help the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013," according to the fund's website. For more information and to donate, click here

4. Today, there are two town meetings, both of which are open to the public. 

At 4, the Senior Citizens Commission meets and at 5 the Recreation and Parks Commission meets. Both meetings will be held in the Community Center. 

5. On this date in 1985, Coca-Cola changed its formula and released New Coke. It wound up being a disaster and the old formula was back on the market within three months. And on this date, the first public school in the United States – Boston Latin School – was founded in Boston.
