Daily Five: Decision Day for Disgraced Waterford Priest

Five things to know for Monday, April 15, 2013.

UPDATE: Judge Susan B. Handy, the presiding judge over Fr. Dennis Carey's case, called out sick today. Carey's court date has been pushed back until April 29.

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high around 59, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 46, according to the service.

2. Today is a big day for Fr. Dennis Carey, the former head pastor of Waterford’s St. Paul’s Church. Carey was arrested in June for first-degree possession of child pornography.

At his last court appearance in February, Carey was given a deal to think about by the prosecuting attorney. At his court appearance today, Carey has a choice: accept the deal or face a trial.

Presiding Judge Susan B. Handy said that if Carey does not take the deal, she would not accept any deal in the future that would include less jail time. The details of this deal were not made public at his February court appearance.

3. Last week, the Waterford Board of Finance – after a long discussion - approved a $143,180 appropriation to replace the roof and gutters at the Waterford Police Department. The request will be forward to the Waterford Representative Town Meeting for final approval.

4. Per usual, there is a full slate of events today at the Waterford Public Library.

At 10 and 11 a.m., there is Little Listeners, a reading program for children aged birth to three. And at 6 this evening, the library is playing Zero Dark Thirty (R), a movie about the mission to kill Osama bin Laden.
