Clark Lane Mathletes Win Second Place

Clark Lane Middle School's MATHCOUNTS team excelled among 27 middle schools and 212 students in Eastern CT, clinching second place at the Eastern Chapter Competition.

Clark Lane Middle School's MATHCOUNTS team excelled among 27 middle schools and 212 students in Eastern Connecticut, clinching the second place trophy at the Eastern Chapter Competition hosted by the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers at the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012.

The Clark Lane MATHCOUNTS team members who competed at the regional competition included Robert Kao, who served as team captain and ranked first as an individual competitor with a perfect score, Nathaniel Rowe, Kevin Su and Areeb Mirza.  They each proudly took home a second place MATHCOUNTS Team trophy in honor of their collective achievement. 

The team, which has been meeting once per week before school at 7:00 a.m. to solve challenging math problems, will move on to the MATHCOUNTS Connecticut State Competition which will be held on March 10 at the University of Hartford. Also representing Clark Lane Middle School at the competition were team alternates Sophie Wang, Colin Lee and Nikhil Agrawal.

Mansfield Middle School placed first at the competition followed by Waterford's second ranked Clark Lane Middle School.  Lyme/Old Lyme Middle School finished third and East Lyme Middle School placed fourth.

MATCHCOUNTS is a nationwide middle school math program sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers.  The objective of MATHCOUNTS are to elevate the prestige associated with achievement in mathematics among 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, increase public awareness of the importance of mathematics and bring about improvements in the math curricula of our schools.
