HELPING PARENTS WITH BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES

The Salvation Army of New London, and the Kiwanis Club of New London, are both solid organizations that have been serving The Southern New London County and its communities for several decades. A major proportion of both agencies services is focus on the youths of our area, and all things necessary to provide for uplifting support in the lives of our youths. These two organization are collaborating on a project which they hope will promote that support, and the project they are conducting is a 'Back To School Supplies' giveaway.

These 2 organizations have the intention to help 200 kids who will be entering Kindergarten through 8 grades during the 2013/2014 school year, and whose families are currently having difficulties with today's economic situation, to be receivers of brand new, basic school supplies, (Back packs, notebooks, pens, papers, markers, etc...) for free. There have already been plenty of sign ups, however not enough sign ups to fulfill the desire of these two organizations to actually have 200 giveaways. At the point of this posting, there are still 60 more spots that are still open. It is for this reason that The Salvation Army and The Kiwanis Club are announcing that they will hold one more day of sign ups, and that day will take place on Friday, August 9th, from 9 am until 3 pm, at The Salvation Army New London Community Center, located at 11 Governor Winthrop BLVD. You must please remember this is a ONE DAY only extension, and it will strictly be base on a first come, first serve priority.

If you intend to come and signed up, you MUST please have the following items with you when you arrive: a photo ID, proof of residence, proof of income, (If your income is welfare or SSI, or SSIDI, or any Government supplement, including workman's comp, you must have the letter that indicates you are receiving such. If you are working, your most recent pay stub will do. If you are getting direct deposit, a copy of your recent deposits will suffice.), proof of rent or mortgage, birth certificate for each child, (If you are a guardian of the child, you must have the document that indicate that you are legally responsible for the child), and proof of school the child is attending along with what grade they will attend, (final report card and/or transcript, or if a newly registered child, the registry letter with the school's heading on it.) If you are a parent who will be working a job during the sign up hours, you will be allowed to send another person, (preferably a close relative), who is 18 years of age or older, but they must have your photo ID, or a copy of your ID, along with all of the items that have been listed. If these items are not with a person, the application may not be able to be filled out, and therefore the spot will be forfited to the next person.

The Salvation Army and the Kiwanis Club would also like to extend an invitation to anybody who would wish to purchase and donate back to school items to this project, there is still time to do so. The kind donations of the items can be bought to The salvation Army (11 Winthrop Blvd) building tomorrow, Thursday, Friday. and on Monday, (last day for drop offs) between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm. The most heavily needed items at this point are the back packs. However, any items that falls into the basic back to school items for any grades between Kindergarten and 8th, will most greatly and gracefully be appreciated.

Distribution date will be Tuesday, August 20th. A ticket for pick ups will be given to all those who will be on the receiver's list.
