Locked out on a cold December Night at L+M

Well, what a chilly evening this was on December 8th, 2013 when I again visited the striking nurses at L+M on the street and briefly talked with them.  Pictures would reveal Jenn Srednicki RN, Julie Krzyzaniak RN, and Dessani Miller RN who were busily walking the picket line and showing their devotion to the "cause."

So, some will say, what cause?  Well, after visiting another night this week, it was apparent from Tech Union President Stephanie Johnson that this strike is about job security and not about money.  So, I ask this community to look very closely at this strike and to observe that if they were to walk into their job tomorrow and were told, no job for you - wouldn't you want some protection?  If not, ok, then start pounding the pavement. But, it sure is cold out there!

In an industry that seems to value training, skills and dedication, is this a new type of fight going on.  Maybe not just a local issue, but maybe a state and national issue.  I would ask, where does it start and where does it end?  You all know that corporations are born, exist, die, some are reborn or have a competitor take over.  So even though I lean heavily in favor of these nurses in all fairness, this does seem to be an American problem that we seem to not be able to solve.

Are we going backwards, or are we now using the processes which were fought for long ago by the old Union bosses?  Some good, and some bad.  I must say these people are being very professional.  What, one loud protest.  I have heard more commotion on a Friday or Saturday night in the summer from the blasting music or loud noise then this ever had.  Whether it be from bars or speeding cars or loud sirens to the horrible fires, etc., we have noise.  No not a choice at night, but maybe a little attention sometimes.

Is this maybe the AFT's fireworks to display to the public that this is really a serious problem.  Maybe not just L+M Hospital but also other healthcare institutions and businesses.  Let's face it, I am getting quite use to but a little fed up with some businesses hiring incompetent younger people who then take off for greener pastures.  Some of course are excellent.  But really, we see it, hear it, and know it is so.  Professionals everywhere are just thrown away like rubbish.

So, the next time you look in the mirror, remember that YOU could be that person or group that is thrown away - like rubbish!  Is that really the direction we want to go in this country.
