Where: Waterford High School, Waterford, CT
Who: Drivers or passengers with autism. Drivers must have a current license, car, registration, and insurance. One support person is welcome to attend.
What: Officers from the Waterford, Groton Town, Groton City, Montville, New London, East Lyme, and Southern Police Departments will perform practice routine traffic stops with drivers and passengers with autism. These traffic stops will allow participants to engage with an officer and experience a routine traffic stop in a controlled setting. It is expected that this experience will familiarize participants with the typical steps of a traffic stop and prepare them for the experience elsewhere. Participants will learn how to effectively utilize the Blue Envelope when stopped by a police officer. Blue Envelopes will be available for drivers should they choose to use them. The Blue Envelope is a Connecticut DMV resource that provides a blue colored envelope with written instructions to assist a motorist with autism spectrum disorder navigate a traffic stop. The envelope also alerts police officers that the individual has autism so that enhanced communication can be reached between the two. <a href="https://portal.ct.gov/DMV/Licenses/Licenses/Autism-awareness" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://portal.ct.gov/DMV/Lice...</a>
For everyone, a traffic stop can create some anxiety. For an individual with autism, it may have an even greater impact. This program is designed to alleviate some of the stress associated with a traffic stop by providing an opportunity for drivers, passengers, and officers to interact in a safe, predictable manner.
Participants will utilize their own vehicles for the practice traffic stops which will take place in a closed parking lot. Before the traffic stops, participants will review the steps of a routine traffic stop, and how to use the DMV Blue Envelope. Drivers and police officers will also have the opportunity to meet and engage informally prior to the traffic stops.

Join your neighbors from all walks of life and communities from across the state to call for an end to the destruction of life in Gaza and stop the planned invasion of Rafah, which could carry with it unimaginable consequences.
After six months of bombing, occupation, blockade and displacement, at least 33,000 Palestinians have died - 1 out of every 65 in Gaza. Most of the housing is destroyed or damaged, 1.9 million are still displaced and humanitarian organizations warn that the starvation which has begun could become catastrophic very soon.
There is no justification for the continuation of this siege. It must end now.
The weapons required to destroy Gaza come from the United States. This means we can stop it. Join us for a march and rally that may be the largest so far in our state!

The Lyme Grange’s annual Spring Plant sale will be held on Saturday May 11th
from 9 to 1 at the Lyme fairgrounds on Rt 156 and Sterling City Road in Lyme rain or shine.
Come pick out that special gift for Mom or browse the selection of heirloom tomatoes, annuals, and vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, geraniums, hydrangeas, perennials, and shrubs that will be available. Additionally, there will be information available on creating a pollinator garden of your own. 
Children are welcome to come join in at our “junior gardener” area where they can learn how to mix their own potting soil and pot their very own pumpkin seedling or sunflower.to take home to grow and care for. They can also learn to make their own “plant waterer” from a plastic water or soda bottle. This program will share our agricultural knowledge with “future gardeners! 
All proceeds from the spring plant sale benefit the Lyme Granges’ ongoing building upgrades and planned future agricultural programs for the community. Coffee, beverages, and some baked goods will be available to make your shopping more enjoyable!

The Waterford Historical Society will hold its first Second Saturday event on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Society’s historic buildings and on Jordan Green. “Common Threads” offers reenactments by the Dirty Blue Shirts historians’ collective sharing their knowledge and demonstrations of local culture, fiber arts from samplers to sails, everyday history, sheep farming and more. Bringing the past to life of those who lived and learned in the mid 1800’s in Waterford, the event is for adults and children alike and is free and open to the public. Donations to the Society are always gratefully accepted. 
Needlework, quilting, samplers and ropemaking
Rebecca Bayreuther Donohue of the Dirty Blue Shirts, portraying widow Lydia Beebe whose sailor husband, Albert, was lost at sea, will be in the Beebe-Phillips House to mingle with visitors and tell them of her life. Her husband’s demise left her with their son, Orrin, born in 1836, so Mrs. Beebe took to sewing to make a living for herself and her young child. 
Carrying through with the seafaring nature of the Beebe family men, sitting by the “try pot” in front of the Jordan Park House another historian will portray a sailor sharing knowledge of canvas sails and natural fiber rigging with “Textiles at Sea: The Science of Natural Fibers.” 
Near the 1740 Jordan Schoolhouse, a school teacher will discuss needlework samplers, referencing original samplers found in the Beebe-Phillips House, and another historian will expound on quilting and quilt-making. The schoolhouse will be open for tours.
Upstairs in the Stacy Barn across the blue bridge, visitors can learn more about the sometimes-strange-looking but important implements of Waterford’s farming past, among them yokes, rakes, hay balers, and corn shuckers. Waterford once was home to more than 100 dairy farms, with familiar local family names as Dimmock, Radway, and Steward among them. 
Blacksmith demonstrations
The Ralph Madara Blacksmith Shop will be open to observe the blacksmiths at work, and their hand-forged items will be for sale.

Waterford Historical Society presents “Common Threads” May 11 on Jordan Green

Waterford Country School invites all donors, volunteers and friends (21 and older) to view the newly built Peacock Family enclosure. Our spring endeavor to raise money for a grand home (<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-palace-for-paulie" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">GoFundMe-a&nbsp;Palace for Paulie</a>) culminates in this cocktail party for friends of the farm to come take a tour and meet Paulie, the peacocks and all the other rescued animals on the WCS Farm. Light refreshments and drinks will be served so please register your attendance! Dress is casual, wear shoes that allow for walking around and enjoying the farm.

One of the most special aspects of our Quaker Hill, CT campus is the wonderful farm and wildlife rehab center housed on the 320 acres of rural land. We take in injured or neglected animals and care for them. Almost 200 animals are taken in every year.
