Five Things To Know For Monday, July 18, 2011

1. Today is expected to be sunny, with a high of 82, according to the Weather Channel. Tonight it should drop down to 69, but stay clear, according to the channel.

2. Tonight, the planning and zoning commission will discuss a change to application by , which wants to put a new entrance for the restaurant. Buffalo Wild Wings will go where the old Charley's was located. New ownership wants to put an entrance next to the mall’s main west entrance. A picture of the plan is attached.

3. J.W. “Bill” Sheehan has been pushing for people to come out to run for office, and time is running out. The Republicans meet Tuesday to nominate their candidates, and the Democrats meet July 26 at Town Hall. All interested Republicans should call Brian Vachris at 860-447-0142 and all interested Democrats should call Sheehan at 860-442-9053. And if anybody is running for first selectman, call me at 860-287-5265.

4. Today is a day of golf tournaments. At 12:30, the Cactus Jack foundation holds its 14th annual charity golf tournament at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. And at noon today is the Fifth Annual Bill Bentley Memorial Golf tournament at New London Country Club. Proceeds from both events go to charity.

5. On this date in 1955, Disneyland opens in Anaheim, Calif. Disneyland is the first theme park opened by Disney. And on this date in 1969, after a party on Chappaquiddick Island, Senator Ted Kennedy drives his car off of a bridge and into the water, killing the passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne.
