Daily Five: Crystal Mall Renovation Update, Subway Approved

Five Things To Know For Monday, Nov. 28, 2011

1. This morning should start foggy, but clear up by 8, and then be sunny for the rest of the day with a high of 61, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low of 48, according to the service.

2. is now halfway complete, and will be halted temporarily until the end of the Christmas season. The renovation is expected to be done by April.

So far, new tile has been laid on the lower level, the bathrooms on the food court have been redesigned, the handrails on the second floor have been “modernized,” soft seating has been put throughout the shopping center, the kids play area has been refurbished and relocated to the lower level of the Christmas Tree Shop’s court and the guest services booth has been refurbished and relocated near the elevator, according to a mall press release.

Also, for Christmas, there is a new “magical-themed” set for children to take pictures with Santa, a 20-foot Christmas tree, an 8-foot wreath and LED lights throughout the mall, according to the release.

“This is a special time of year at Crystal Mall and we’re thrilled to offer our shoppers our new family-friendly amenities and beautiful décor this holiday season,” General Manager Karen Tarantino said in the release.

2. At their Nov. 21 meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission approved an application, with conditions, by Thomas McAvoy to put a Subway restaurant at 166 and 168 Parkway North (across the street from and ).

3. Just a quick shout out to Waterford’s Anthony Malhoit, who now plays on the University of Rhode Island’s basketball team. Malhoit, a 6’3”, 200 lb guard, spent two years at UConn Avery Point after leading Waterford High School to the 2007 Class M Championship game. Malhoit, a walk-on, is a senior.

5. On this date in 1994, a fellow inmate in a Wisconsin prison clubbed serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer to death with a broom. Dahmer was 34. And today would have been Anna Nicole Smith’s 44th birthday, if she hadn’t died at age 39 in 2007.
