Daily Five: Taxpayer Dollars To Charities
Five Things To Know For Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012
1. Today should be sunny, with a high of 47, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be cloudy, with a low of 28, according to the service.
2. Today at 10 a.m., the Social Service Grants Review Committee meets to give money to a variety of local charities. In recent years, as budgets grow tighter, some have said the town should not give taxpayer money to charities. In response, the committee has stopped donating to some charities that were deemed more "wants" than "needs," such as the Boy Scouts. Overall, the town donates around $20,000 to various agencies voluntarily (others are mandated).
Today, the group will hear presentations from the Thames Valley Council for Community Action, SECT Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, Community Health Center, Women’s Center of Southeastern Connecticut, Child & Family Agency of SECT, NL County Association for Retarded Citizens, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the NL Homeless Center. Thursday is the second and last meeting for the committee this year.
